Welcome to the Water Monitoring Information Portal

This Water Monitoring Information Portal (WMIP) service supports the water assessment and management activities of the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (the Department).

To meet Quality Management System requirements, the Department undertakes reviews of its water monitoring networks every 3 to 5 years to ensure they remain fit-for-purpose and meet the primary requirements as described in the Water Act 2000. The recommendations from network reviews are incorporated into the annual updating of approved network lists as budget and operational requirements allow.

On the WMIP you can find out about:

  • Latest river height and stream flow values from the Department's water monitoring stations throughout Queensland*
  • Historic streamflow data from decommissioned river and stream monitoring stations
  • Groundwater levels from the Department's monitoring bores that are equipped with data loggers*
  • The Department's water monitoring network site lists

* Latest instantaneous and latest daily values are unverified data

New

  • Fish Death Risk data and reports for State and Qld MDB released, see lower left- hand side of the WMIP navigation pane
  • Qld Government Water Monitoring Hydrology Archive Open Data Holding is now available
  • WMIP REST API Documentation and Guide
  • Discrete Water Quality Data for all monitoring projects and sites
This new resource vastly increases the amount of Discrete Water Quality data available through WMIP. The previously unpublished data spans 75 Projects and means the number of Sites has grown from 1229 to 4372, Samples from 136863 to 266961 and Results from 1558840 to 2717421.
The data can be found via the "Discrete Water Quality Data Holdings" tab in the Streamflow Data section Open Stations for the entire state and also for each sub-basin.

For the latest information about stream and river heights for flood warning purposes, refer to the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology website

WMIP Technical Support

WMIP is supported during standard business hours.

At approved network sites, information delivered via the WMIP is subject to the Department's processes and procedures used to monitor the State’s natural water resources that have been reviewed and certified as complying with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 by BSI under certificate number FS 605172. This provides confidence in the quality of water information provided from approved network sites.

A mobile version of this service is available for use on smartphone / internet- enabled mobile devices and for computers with limited bandwidth. Support for these services is limited.

Data Currency

Some data displayed on this service is captured by automated monitoring stations. The most common method of data transmission is via the mobile phone network, while about 20% of the stations (often in very remote areas) use a satellite communications network. The normal frequency of data transmission for the majority of stations is hourly with satellite communication normally at three hourly intervals.

When weather conditions cause rapid increases in rainfall and/or river heights, the monitoring station dataloggers are capable of recording data every few minutes, while stations using the mobile network can transmit this data as it is generated. Upon receipt of the data, the expected latency (screening and processing through to publication on this web portal) is less than 30 minutes. Latency greater than this is usually due to there being no change in the data recorded or network communications issues preventing timely transmission of data.
